The Retweet is the word of mouth advertising in it’s truest form. All advertisers know that word of mouth advertising is the best, most influential method of product or service promotion available. A third-party endorsement of your product or service has always been the Holy Grail of marketing because it’s believable. Pre-Internet/Social Media days, it was about finding early adapters of products and services who loved to tell their friends and neighbors about their new widget.
The Internet has created hundreds of more ways to communicate. We don’t depend on meeting Bill on the street who tells you about the great service he got at a restaurant or what a great deal he got on vacation home. In the Digital Age, we look online and find out about the experiences, good or bad, someone has had with his new car or cable company. The online chat has replaced the over the fence chat between neighbors in a community. The new communities are Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, blogs and hundreds of other social media properties. The real difference being the level of personal versus online interaction you have. Social media sites help to control the mass of people wanting to follow you or join your network and such but that still does not stop people from focusing on building their following to communicating “en masse” as opposed to building a following of good quality and qualified followers.
Take advantage of the viral power of Twitter to promote your products or services but do not let that be the soul focus of your buzz. Give your Twitter followers/neighbors a nice “Hello” or “Hey, how are you doing?” Tell them about other things of value to them that are worthy of their Retweet and then provide a little bit of marketing..and remember, if it’s worthwhile to them, they will Retweet it and pass it along to their Twitter followers.
